Health Benefits of Mulberries

Healthy Living With Type 1 Diabetes Health Benefits of MulberriesMulberries are a good source of raw food protein, a rarity in the fruit kingdom. They are also a good source of magnesium, potassium, riboflavin, iron, calcium, vitamin C, and fiber. One of the mulberry’s greatest health assets is it’s high concentration of resveratrol, an antioxidant currently being studied for its effects on heart health. An ancient fruit of Asia, the mulberry is touted in medicinal folklore as a remedy for ringworm, insomnia, arthritis, and tapeworm. Lets take a look how mulberries can help your overall health!

Mulberries and Diabetes:

Mulberries contain compounds that support balanced sugar and control blood sugar in people who suffer from diabetes. Flavonoids present in mulberries have shown to help prevent the drastic the rise and fall of blood sugar levels in patients. So mulberries in turn can be an effective alternative to help minimize complications in both type 1 and type 2 diabetics.

Mulberries and Vision:

As diabetics it is also very important to stay on top of our eye health. Drinking a glass of mulberry juice also improves vision. It has a high content of Vitamin A which strengthens our eye sight and relieves eye strain, which is ideal for people who spend hours on computer. It also protects eyes from free radicals which is the cause of eye sight loss and retina degeneration.

Mulberries and Iron:

Mulberries also benefit your health by increasing your iron intake. A cup of mulberries offers 2.6 milligrams of iron, which is 32 percent of the daily iron intake recommended for men and 14 percent of the daily intake recommended for women. Iron helps ensure that your tissues can access the oxygen they need. It not only helps store and transport oxygen, but it also senses the oxygen present in your tissues to detect dangerously low oxygen levels. Iron also guides the growth of white blood cells, which boosts your immune system, and helps prevent complications during pregnancy.

Some people have been using Mulberry juice to beautify their skin and to cure some skin disorders like acne. This can be attributed to the high vitamin C contents of the fruit. Another benefit is the prevention of hair loss. The extract of this fruits can reduce the
amount of hair loss in men and can help in rejuvenating hair follicles especially after chemotherapy.

Mulberries can be added to your salad and great as jams, jellies and syrups. They don’t freeze well so if you have a lot of mulberries, use it immediately. Because of its high water content and thin skins, they tend to get moldy or ferment fast. If you have a lot, it is best to turn them into jams, syrups or bake as cakes.
