Top Ways To Fight Fatigue For People With Diabetes

Healthy Living With Type 1 Diabetes Top Ways To Fight Fatigue For People With DiabetesWith our hectic lifestyles its no surprise that we are running around like zombies. For me personally as a stay at home dad of 4 little ones, I’m not afraid to admit, come 2pm…I’m complete junk. What do I do? Sadly, most times I reach for the coffee. YES, there are certainly certainly healthier options out there to give you that mid afternoon boost so lets take a look at a couple of the ways we can fight fatigue!

Do you struggle to stay awake in the afternoon? Ever feel worn out just thinking about all the things you need to get done in a day? Even after a good night’s sleep do you not feel fully energized? Fatigue can be linked to a medical condition (high blood sugar anyone?), but for many people mild fatigue is just a byproduct of a busy lifestyle.

If you’re like most people in America you probably feel fatigued at times. So what are some easy ways to fight fatigue? Everyone seems to have a “top 10 ways to beat fatigue” list these days. Lets take a look at some of the most effective tactics to fight fatigue.

Fatigue And Your Workload:

Most people blame their fatigue on having too much to do, and it certainly plays a major role. In order to fight fatigue, assess what is truly important on your to-do list, and start saying “no” to demands on your time that don’t enhance your life in some tangible way. At the office, either delegate or work with your supervisor to determine which tasks are truly urgent and which ones are not worth sweating over.

To Much Exercise?

Though it may seem counter intuitive, exercising regularly actually boosts energy levels rather than depleting them, particularly when you incorporate low-impact workouts that involve stretching, such as Yoga, Pilates, or Tai Chi. Exercise reduces stress, which is a serious cause of fatigue. Higher-intensity exercise and cardio also reduce stress, providing an outlet for frustrations and releasing happy hormones called endorphins—which also fights off fatigue.

Fatigue And Your Diet:

What you eat has a serious bearing on what your energy levels are like throughout the day. Eating large amounts of fatty, greasy foods will leave you with that heavy feeling in your stomach, and make you sleepy. As mentioned, eating foods stocked with a high amount of sugar will spike glucose levels—which will lead to a crash, and fatigue. Eating too much food in general will make you feel sleepy (Thanksgiving anyone).

The best approach, then, is to eat a balanced, healthy diet low in junk food. It is even better if you avoid large meals, and opt for more frequent, smaller meals during the day. This will better regulate blood sugar, and keep you from overindulging due to increased hunger between meals.

Keep It Simple With These Fatigue Fighting Tips:

  • You need to eat the right things in all food groups.Healthy Living With Type 1 Diabetes Top Ways To Fight Fatigue For People With Diabetes
  • Fight fatigue by phasing out the energy-robbing processed carbs. These give you
the buzz, then the slight headache, and then the yawning begins.
  • You need to eat regularly, maybe from more than one food group.
  • Fight fatigue by avoiding overeating and robbing your brain of the ability to digest your food.

Drinking plenty of water is also a great way to fight fatigue. Dehydration can cause you to feel lethargic. You should be drinking at least eight glasses of water each day.  If you feel that you drink a lot of liquid and you still feel tired, ditch the juice and the soda and switch to plain water instead. Next time fatigue kicks in and you feel like you are falling asleep at your desk, take a break and drink a nice, cold of water and see if your energy level improves.
